Text Messaging, Facebook, iphones & the like
okay, so this is my spill. You don't have to agree, call me old fashioned but I have some issues with the rapid growing new technology that our culture is spitting out by the second. I shutter at the thought of what is next. When I became a teenager the coolest thing out was desktop computers and AOL internet...wow, have we come along way and as IF Aim messaging, e-mail, and the landline telephone wasn't enough to distract...let's add cell phones, texting, iphones, ipods, laptops. Heck, now you can carry the internet on your portable cell phone so you can get every single FB notification or tweet sent directly to you and we call it "having friends." I currently have 472 friends on facebook, which is probably only about half of the friends that most people I know have. I don't know about you fellow bloggers, but besides the fact that technology is seeming to consume my life and the lives of those around me, the moral lines are starting to get blurry to me. Too much of anything can be bad, right? The positive side of technology is that I can keep up with friends I have met in foreign countries without the outrageous costs that calling them on my home phone would induce. Yet, I find myself texting people that live in the same house with me!! It's easier. fast. quick. skip the awkward and get it over with, right? and hey, let's be honest, it feels a lot better to be rejected by a text message or facebook than face to face right? The new cool thing is the iphone. What in heavens do we need an iphone for? You can already have your FB notifications and your friends tweets sent to your cell phone free why bother getting one? I use all of these things with the exception of an iphone (and who's to say if I could afford it that I wouldn't be sucked in too?) My question is what would the Lord think if we handed him a cell phone and instead of really spending time with him we could just be less intimate and text Him our desires? Does that offend you? I'm sorry, but imagine that you were the creator of the universe and you created sons and daughters to love you and to love each other? and they reduced love to facebook, eharmony, and text messaging? How must he feel? Seriously, I am afraid for my children! I pray that the Lord protects them from having 100% of their relationships be superficial. You see, Facebook, iphones, text messaging, etc. PROMISES that we will have more friends and be less lonely. My friend, it is a lie. We are more secluded than ever, we are so self-centered we forget that we NEED to give each other a hug and say hello face to face. "Oh, I'll just fb chat them later, or text them, they know I love them right?" I don't know about you but to me that shows me nothing..i'm just another number in your phone, another person to add to your massive load of friends on fb, and another friend to read your superficial status updates. Maybe I am the only one in the whole world who feels this way, it wouldn't be the first time..but I, for one, am not okay with where things are going and I honestly want to know what the Father thinks of it all.
