As I am reading John Eldredge's book, so many things are running through my mind. I've been asking the Lord about it, because it's soooo different from the way I normally think. It's obvious to me that God created desire, but it's also obvious to me that desire can get us into trouble. James 4:1-2 makes that pretty clear. What about the desire to eat, drink, and be in relationship with those around us? You never hear someone yell at you for wanting that, right? Well, my family yells at me when I tell them I'm hungry, but that's just them, haha. Seriously though, you are not going to reprimanded for saying "I'm hungry, thirsty, cold, and alone." Those are called basic needs, or desires. But what do we do with the deep? Oh no one wants to tread those waters. Just tell someone you don't have the desire or feel called to school, a 9-5 job, to be married, or some other cultural norm, then you will surely be reprimanded by one or more people. WHY? Are those desires not important because they're not basic or normal. Even proverbs says: Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire is fulfilled, it is a tree of life. I know there is an extreme and that desire can lead us into trouble. One might desire to get drunk, be on drugs, sleep around, cheat on their spouse, etc. I believe satan has taken something God created to bring us life, and tried to pervert it to bring us death. It's going to be interesting reading this book and hearing the Lord speak through it. I'll leave you with this:
"To live fully-that is to say, to live life as God meant for us to live-demands a full recovery of our heart. You need that wellspring flowing swift and clear and true. And that, my friends, waits upon how you handle your heart's desire."
